I bought my laptop from your Wolverhampton branch back in November 2012. The sales assistant showed me a few different laptops and I remarked that I didn't like the look of Windows 8 at all. I was told that you couldn't buy a new laptop without Windows 8 but by clicking the desktop tile I would get something a lot more familiar.
Well, I bought the laptop - a Sony Vaio SVE151G11M - and after giving Windows 8 a chance (six months is a fair crack of the whip, isn't it?) I've had enough.
- Scrolling up and down moves the screen left and right
- Simple tasks invove far too many clicks - shutting down for example
- The "Charms" aren't charming at all and get in the way of scroll bars
- Closing apps is convoluted (thankfully ALT+F4 still works)
- The Start Button isn't the Start Button anymore, it just takes you to those childish tiles. I mean, come on! It looks like a 13 year old girl's mobile phone has vomited on the screen!
The final straw was when it ran updates without asking and TOLD me it was going to shut down so I should save any unsaved work. Pardon me? What do you mean "Your PC will restart in 5 minutes"? Surely you mean "You need to restart your PC to install updates, restart now or later?" not "We know that you paid good money for this system and you may be in the middle of something but we're in charge and your machine is only there to run our glorious software so get out of the way, peasant."
I am aware that I can switch this off but when faced with that ultimatum I wasn't thinking about doing that, I was thinking "how dare you!"
If I wanted a toy, and I'm talking about the ugly as sin UI here, I would have bought one. If I wanted an inflexible OS where I would be teated like a child, I would have bought an Apple product. This is the same reason both my smartphones are Droids with the custom ROMs of my choice.
It's my laptop and I want to use it as I see fit.
Long story short, PC World Person, any chance I can bring it in and get it downgraded, although as you can probably tell I would actually consider it an upgrade of stellar proportions, to Windows 7?
P.S. This diatribe isn't directed at you; I would have CC'd this to Microsoft's complaints department but they don't seem to have one, and if they do they make it very difficult to find. Feel free to pass it on to them if you want :o)
